Week 3 was more revealing and an eye opener for majority of NFL teams. Teams are finding out who they really are fast and that could lead to some major adjustments. Some teams are dominating while others are dealing with the injury bug and are struggling for a win. Here are the top 10 teams after week 3 entering October.
10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1)
Here they come. The Bucs ship is finally sailing after finally having some chemistry built in three weeks. The Tom Brady-led offense looks better than in week 1 but the defense is the strongest point of this team. Ranking in the top 5, the defense has only allowed 300 yards per game and the run-defense is third among yards allowed with 70 yards per game. Shaq Barrett had a couple of sacks with one being a safety and a dominant secondary that forced Denver to go to their 3rd string QB. The offense may get all the spotlight but the defense is quietly one of the best defenses in the league.
9. Los Angeles Rams (2-1)
This team was dead in the water after being down 28-3 in the third quarter against the Bills. However, they scored 28 unanswered points in the second half and led 32-28 with 5 minutes left to give them a shot at still being undefeated. It didn’t work out in their favor as Josh Allen threw a game-winning touchdown with 15 seconds left. They went from nearly pulling off the greatest comeback in franchise history to heartbreak. Some bright spots were that this offense has a very good run game in the post Todd Gurley era with Darrell Henderson taking the reigns. Jared Goff took a while to get going but utilized his weapons in Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp throwing for 321 yards and two touchdowns. Even with this loss, they are still a contender in the NFC. Oh yeah, Aaron Donald is still a beast.
8. Tennessee Titans (3-0)
Stephen Gostkowski has had a wild start to the season. After the whole football world was calling for his head after a dreadful week 1 performance, Mike Vrabel kept him on the roster and has been fantastic since. He made all 6 of his kicks this past Sunday including a 55-yarder to put the Titans ahead with under two minutes to go. He has been a great story for all the kickers out there. The offense looks great with Tannehill once again and the defense can improve as the weeks go on. They have won their first three games by a combined six points and will face the Steelers and Bills within the next two weeks.
7. New England Patriots (2-1)
After a tough loss in the Northwest, the Patriots put a smack down on the Raiders. The defense was able to shut down the Raiders top weapon in Darren Waller and controlled the running attack forcing Josh Jacobs to just 71 yards. The offense was run-heavy again with Sony Michel totaling 117 yards and Rex Burkhead scoring a couple of touchdowns. Cam didn’t have a good day in the air but Sunday’s performance showed that this offense can beat you in many ways. A road trip to Kansas City is next up which can be a huge challenge for this team.
6. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-0)
The Steelers won the Watt Bowl after a dominant second half performance. After allowing 21 points in the first half, the defense shut out Deshaun Watson and the Texans the rest of the game. They took advantage of Houston’s offensive line and got to Watson 5 times in the second half. The offense was able to establish long drives that controlled the clock. The running game came in clutch for them too, as James Connor and Anthony McFarland ran for over 150 yards combined on 24 carries. The Steelers are off to a good start with the schedule getting a bit tougher in October.
5. Baltimore Ravens (2-1)
That didn’t work out as planned. The Ravens had a tough loss going against the defending champions. The run game was shut down and Lamar Jackson was limited in the passing game with just 97 yards. The defense had a tall task trying to shut down Mahomes but he had 5 total touchdowns. The Chiefs now have the upper hand when it comes to getting the 1 seed in the AFC. Baltimore could take this game and clean up the mistakes that the Chiefs may have exposed. The schedule works in their favor for October as the next three games are against Washington, the Bengals, and the Eagles.
4. Buffalo Bills (3-0)
Blowing a 25 point lead is not really the best look but the ability to win when all momentum is gone is enormous. Josh Allen is off to a MVP-caliber start accounting for five total TDs against the Rams, including the game-winner to Tyler Kroft with 15 seconds remaining in the game. He has 12 total touchdowns through 3 games which is the most in Bills history. Beating a record set by Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly will definitely turn some heads but Allen has been playing at an all-time level. A road trip to Vegas is next for the red-hot Bills.
3. Seattle Seahawks (3-0)
It’s the Russell Wilson show. He is simply amazing. You had to of know that when the Cowboys took the lead, Wilson was going to march right down the field for the go-ahead touchdown. He did just that throwing to DK Metcalf for his 5th touchdown of the game. That’s 14 in three weeks for Wilson, who’s on pace for 75 passing scores this season. Getting to 75 seems doubtful but there’s no question that he’s been balling out of his mind. The defense is still a concern but won’t matter with Russell Wilson dominating opposing defenses.
2. Green Bay Packers (3-0)
A trip to the Superdome resulted in a 37-30 win for the Pack to put them at 3- 0. Aaron Rodgers had another tremendous game with 283 yards passing and three scores without Davante Adams. Allen Lazard has stepped right up to be the compliment to Adams when he is in and out of the lineup. Lazard had 6 catches for 146 yards and a score showing that he can be a perfect number two option at wideout. The Packers have scored a team-record 122 points through three weeks averaging 40 points per game and no turnovers. They are on a hot start and have a Monday night matchup with the Falcons before their bye week.
1. Kansas City Chiefs (3-0)
The Chiefs look better than they ever have and that’s scary for a team that just won the Super Bowl. The defense stopped the run and played very tight coverage forcing Lamar Jackson into throws he didn’t want to make. The Chiefs only allowed 228 total yards and 13 points to last year’s best offense. The offense is still a juggernaut with Patrick Mahomes scoring 5 total touchdowns. The Chiefs haven’t lost a game since last November and with the way they’re playing right now, they may not lose for a while.
