The man, the myth, the legend. The voice of hockey. Mike “Doc” Emrick announced that he is retiring from being a broadcaster Monday. Emrick’s résumé includes calling 22 Stanley Cup Finals and winning eight Sports Emmy Awards for play-by-play, including seven straight from 2014 to 2020. He was also elected into the NHL Hall of Fame in 2008 and became the only announcer to be elected into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011. Doc was the play-by-play announcer for the New Jersey Devils for 21 seasons followed by being the predominant voice for the NHL games on NBC and NBC Sports for the past 15 years.
There’s no other way to describe Mike “Doc” Emrick. He simply was sensational as the voice of hockey. I’m sure he can find words to describe himself as he had countless words to illustrate the fast action on the ice. As the best play-by-play caller of the modern sports era retires, its best to appreciate the greatness he brought into our living rooms with his high energy, rapid-fire storytelling, and charisma. Here are my five favorite calls made by Mike “Doc” Emrick.
The call that opened my eyes to Doc. This OT game winning goal by Darren Helm gave me goosebumps when I was watching this game when I was 15 years old. Crazy overtime action, scramble out in front, fortunate bounce, and a wack-in goal to send the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup. Great call by Doc. Always remember your first.
Just marvelous. Not every great call has to be a goal. The high end drama for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 was narrated perfectly. Also, the fact that the Red Wings won the cup on a last second save adds to the glorious moment.
Oh man. This is my personal favorite call because it was the during the Capitals championship run! The Save and the game-winning goal by Lars Eller were great calls but this one was the best. The madness in front of the net followed by an amazing goal by Alex Ovechkin that swung the momentum of the entire game led to Doc losing his mind (in a good way). Just breathtaking.
The perfect script for hockey does exist. A game-winning goal to win the Stanley Cup is as good as it gets. He did have another championship-winning goal call with the Blackhawks against the Flyers, but it was hard to tell if it was a goal. This was another crack at it and he knocked it out of the park. This call will be played over and over again for the rest of time during every Stanley Cup Finals.
Henrique!…. IT’S OVER!! The game-winning goal by Henrique to send the Devils to the Stanley Cup Finals will go down as the greatest call by Doc Emrick. The fact that he was able to decipher every movement in a big pile of humanity in front of the net was magnificent. Also, it adds a bit more extra to the moment since the Devils were the team that Doc announced for starting out. It’s the perfect call.
